The Power Model of Fitts' Law Does Not Encompass the Logarithmic Model

Whether Fitts’ law, a well-known model of human pointing movement, is a logarithmic law or a power law has remained unclear so far. In two widely cited papers, Meyer et al. have claimed that the power model they derived from their celebrated stochastic optimized-submovement theory encompasses the logarithmic model as a limiting case. We show that Meyer et al.’s theory implies in fact a quasi-lo...

Theories in Computer human interaction Fitts’ Law: Modeling Movement Time in HCI

Fitts' law is a model of human psychomotor behavior developed in 1954 [6]. Extending Shannon’s theorem 17 in information theory (a formulation of effective information capacity of a communication channel), Fitts discovered a formal relationship that models speed/accuracy tradeoffs in rapid, aimed movement (not drawing or writing). According to Fitts’ Law, the time to move and point to a target ...

Behind Fitts' law: kinematic patterns in goal-directed movements

Half a century ago, Paul Fitts first discovered that the time necessary to complete a pointing movement (MT) linearly increases with the amount of information (ID) necessary to specify the target width (W) relative to the distance (D). The so-called Fitts’ law states that MT 1⁄4 a þ b ID; with ID being a logarithmic function of the D/W ratio. With the rising importance of pointing in human–comp...

A New Derivation and Dataset for Fitts' Law of Human Motion

Human motion models for reaching tasks facilitate the design of many systems such as computer and cellphone interfaces, cockpits, and assembly lines. Fitts’ Law specifies a logarithmic two-parameter relationship between motion duration and the ratio of target distance over target size, and more recent models consider square root and modified logarithmic relationships. This paper contributes new...

Evaluation of Fitts’ Law Index of Difficulty Formulation for Screen Size Variations

It is well-known as Fitts’ law that the time for a user to point a target on a GUI screen can be modeled as a linear function of “index of difficulty (ID).” In this paper, the authors investigate whether the traditional ID formulation is appropriate independently of device screen sizes. Result of our experiment reveals that the ID formulation may not consistently capture actual difficulty: user...
